Procedure
1. Obtain all of the needed materials (see Materials.)
2. Set up the materials in your chosen experimenting room.
3. Label 3 pots “6 HOURS” using the permanent marker.
4. Label 3 pots “12 HOURS” using the marker.
5. Label 3 pots “24 HOURS” using the marker.
6. Fill each terra cotta pot with soil up to 2 centimeters from the rim using the garden spade.
7. Set the now full pots down on the ground.
8. Using your finger, make three holes in the dirt with equal spacing between them for each pot.
9. Put a seed in each hole (you should have three seeds per pot; nine seeds per lamp.)
10. Cover the seeds with the soil and pat down gently with your hand.
11. Moisten the soil with 100 mL water
12. Plug all three lamps into the power strip.
13. Place the lamps so that they face one group of pots each, but not the other groups of pots.
14. Place each of two four-by-four pieces of cardboard between the groups and lamps to separate them.
15. Check pots daily for sprouting.
16. Once all nine pots have sprouted, turn the three lamps on.
17. Put a timer on the lamp of the “6 HOUR” pot group. This timer will automatically turn off the light after six hours.
18. At the beginning of each day, turn on all three lamps (though the 24 hour lamp will be on constantly.)
19. After 12 hours of the “12 HOUR” pot group lamp being on, turn off the lamp.
20. The “6 HOUR” pot group has the timer on it, so you don’t have to turn that one off.
21. Measure growth at the end of each day.
22. Record data in data log and data table.
23. Water each pot daily with 100 mL
24. Reset the timer for next day’s use.
25. Record any extraneous circumstances.
